Patient Safety: Mononeuropathies in Scapular Winging
April 03, 2025
Scapular winging is a clinical sign describing an abnormal prominence of the medial or inferior border of the scapula during arm & shoulder motion. It can be present with a wide range of neurologic, neuromuscular, or musculoskeletal conditions. However, the most common are long thoracic and spinal accessory nerve palsies. These two mononeuropathies can often be differentiated on clinical exam due to either medial or lateral positioning consistent with scapular winging.
